History of Golden City Dragon Boat Club

Dragon boat racing in Gauteng started in 2000 when companies sponsored the manufacturing of 6 fibreglass boats. Lionel Benham, founder member of dragon boat racing in Gauteng, is also the custodian of these boats.

The first ever competition in Gauteng was held at Bruma Lake in 2000. Dragon Boat Racing is a team sport and help people to overcome cultural barriers and succeed in one common goal…. To win.

Golden City Dragon Boat Club was formed and constituted in 2002 when a team from South Africa competed in Taipei, in traditional boats, over 500m. Since then Golden City has assisted many clubs to start by lending them boats. The boats even went as far Namibia to help a club there until they bought boats from Cape Town.

Dragon Boat Racing can be as much fun or competitive as you want it to be and is as much a tourist attraction as it is a sport.

Golden City Dragon Boat Club is affiliated to Canoeing South Africa. Other clubs that have joined are Chung-Wah Youth Association, Florida Canoe Club, Johannesburg Canoe Club and now recently also Soweto Canoe and Recreation Club.

In recent years we have hosted many events as well as teambuilding events. Our Club is self funded through hosting events and teambuilding events. We do not charged membership fees as we cater for the less privileged.
